Literature vs Math books for kids and Science books for kid

September 30, 2009

How can you increase children interest to math and science? Try to integrate literature. Not only you may raise your child’s interest for math, but you will also help your child’s reading and writing skills. By choosing maths books for kids that integrate literature, your kids can listen to a great story and learn math concepts at the same time. Similarly for science books for kids, try to choose books that integrate stories, in order to keep the child’s interest while learning. By choosing math books for kids and science books for kids, you are providing a great place for children to improve their creativity skills and increase mathematical or scientific thinking.

And to make it even better, make sure to read the book with your child, and to play along with it. Books about lions? Make sure to roar once in a while! Books about counting apples? Why not use real apples to play, learn and follow the story.

Development of curiosity, knowledge, imagination and language

September 28, 2009

The more a child will get into books and understand how they are written, the more they will want to read them, watch them and finally, understand them.
For teachers, parents or tutors, this give them a great opportunity to work on the language, using the richness of the vocabulary contained in books. A use of a well constructed sentence is much less often used in everyday activities (at home, on the playground, etc), regardless of the child social background. Everybody, including adults, tends to use simplifying the vocabulary and the syntax of the language. While this is okay for adults, children are still learning and need that little addition the books give them. And it is through learning of the proper syntax and vocabulary of language that a child can really acquire it.

Books therefore give a strong support for good speech and language. Books bring personal feelings and thus create children desire to speak.

Novels and poetry are subjective and allow children to have feelings, emotions, and be able to have their own interpretation and visualization of the characters. When it comes to literature, novels and poetry, there is no answer true or false, and children will realize they can say anything without risking the wrong response.

Activity books and science books for kids are more objective and allow children to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world surrounding them, and to develop a curiosity for their environment, allowing them to develop their analytic perception. They allow children to have a more critical point of view of the world around them, to ask the why and to look for answers.

By reading reviews, science books for kids, comics or novels, children will realize they can also learn. The goal is to get kids to have fun while reading. Books will help build children knowledge.

Increase the diversity of book types and themes

September 28, 2009

First, a great way to interest kids into book reading is to bring different books, to group them into different networks in order to allow the kid to explore different themes. The reason for this is to:

- Increase awareness of the abundant variety of editorial production, as well as the wide variety of themes and subjects. For example, you can choose to have some activity books, some novels for kids, some science books for kids, and even some comic books.
- Make kids understand that books are all different. By having the chance to read/see different books, children will realize that they have a unique book, and will have to try  to understand what their book contains, therefore allowing children to be able to analyze the unique content of each book.
- Increase the sense of analysis by making children read different books and engaging them in a work of synthesis. By allowing a group of child to share a network of book, they will be able to compare their books, and try to find what each book have in common and what are the differences.

Suffering from a burn-out?

June 12, 2009

What can you do.

Where to start?

1. Medical monitoring is critical
Everyone on burn-out must have a regular medical follow-up. According to Dr. François-Yves Prevost, general practitioner at the Center for Health and Social Services of Pointe-de-l’Île, the person who receives a diagnosis of adjustment disorder or depression needs to rest. Therefore, a work stoppage is often recommended. When this happens, the doctor gives one or two weeks leave after which he asked to review the patient. It then re-evaluate his condition and decide whether to extend the stop.

2. The medication in each case
Sometimes the doctor may prescribe medication to control anxiety or insomnia. But if the person suffers from severe depression, Dr. Prevost did not hesitate to recommend antidepressants. According to him, this type of medication can quickly help to improve concentration, energy, appetite and sleep. Thus relieved of the most disabling, the person can begin to work in recovery.

3. Rest, but not just sleeping
“A depression or a disorder of adaptation, it can not be cured still lying at home,” said Dr. Prevost. If rest is required, however this is not to spend his days sleeping or watching TV.

The holiday is the perfect opportunity to tame a new pace of life more balanced, said Eric Hurteau, psychologist and director of professional services at Solareh, a firm specializing in prevention and management of absenteeism at work. “Some people are struggling to agree moments of rest. They tend to believe they do enough and they feel guilty, “he says. They suggested to build a schedule that includes periods of activity interspersed with moments of relaxation, as a one hour walk followed by an hour of TV.

This way of organizing his schedule allows the person to remain active and increase its self-esteem. “When my patients have no taste for anything, I ask them what they liked to do before,” says Dr. Prevost. The doctor suggests to force a little every day to indulge in their favorite activities such as cycling or scrapbooking. As the appetite comes with eating, the pleasure will return gradually.

4. A healthy dose of reflection
The sick leave must also be an opportunity to work on yourself, says Dr. Prevost. The support of a psychologist, for example, may help to think about the causes of burn-out and reduce the potential for relapse. Workers who have no insurance or who do not have a Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offered by their employer, however, may turn to other agencies. CLSCs clinics and some hospitals offer some psychotherapy services.
